I recently heard Anthropic quietly setup its own bio lab.

That it’s plausible that they’ll move from selling tokens as their primary source of revenue to building frontier models to do cutting edge research, and using the research as their primary source of revenue rather than release the models. Because it’ll be far less of a race to the bottom than commodified tokens used by the general public.

Will be interesting to see how this all unfolds. (No pun intended, but there is a funny one there…)

Yea, I think that there's pretty much a ceiling with day-to-day models that have already been hit months ago. Maybe you need SOTA for reviews, high-level planning, or research, but long running tasks like writing out a feature, testing, getting feedback and making refactors can be done for low-end models (like luna). And the margins on those models are basically evaporating.

The article talks about the lab, so it's not quiet at all.

apparently big labs are also pitching profit sharing arrangements to biopharma companies in exchange for privileged access to the top internal above-the-api capability models .... repeat this in every industrial vertical and it could turn out that much denied Dario claim may as well have been true for all intents and purposes

I mean its what universities have done for years haven't they?

Never really wondered what financial relationship between research hospitals that participate in drug trials and pharma companies is, but now I'm wondering...

Which claim?

Yeah, I hope so as well. I want to see this tech being used for good stuff and not just spam and inducing fear ...

"I recently heard" cmon brother its in the article

So they're already threatening their customers Amazon-style?

Excellent. Now every pharma company, plus any kind of company that wants to own a market through innovation, will need a "world-class" AI research team that actually has spectacular AI budgets.

Pretty much

The analogy to Amazon works on all sorts of levels. From Amazon.com vs AWS to Amazon.com vs sellers

What is Grammarly anymore, even? Is it Superhuman? Is it Fathom? And what are either of those even?

Even before all that, I switched to Quillbot because Grammarly would always mess up the formatting in my emails in gmail (but only when you viewed it from mobile). Quillbot isn't totally better than that, but at least its cheaper.

The minute you start looking at other non-frontier models, you understand why Dario, Altman, and Musk are coming together to say we need regulation.

None are as good yet, but what everyone said is coming true - models are not moats. And these folks need an exit (even Msuk whose shares are still locked)

So this basically is a way to get ahead of legislation and the industry to self regulate

Because 75-80% still allows them to overhaul society.

I mean for sure I don’t think Dario, Elon, Altman or anybody talking about a slowdown is suggesting they don’t want to overhaul society. They just want to avoid the guillotine while they do it.

And in their defense - I do think they honestly believe in the dangers of AI and think that defensive measures have to be built in, but yeah, as part of the overhaul of society.

Right later in the article he says:

“I believe that if slowing down bought us even an extra year or two before models reach critical levels of capability, and we used that time to advance alignment, we could greatly reduce the risk that something goes seriously wrong.”

This is not a broad societal, maybe we don’t take full advantage of AI and destroy jobs. It’s just - let’s try not to have AI hack into all the critical systems and launch nukes.

I think these AI leaders give a little will be over interpreted as giving a lot, put the brakes on legislation, and basically rerun the social media playbook.

In 5 or 10 years everyone will once again be “why did we let this happen?”

Why is that a trick?

It’s part the model they use your emails to target you with ads

Shrug. If you feel you can do better by offering free email with ad targetting and beat GMail in the market, feel free. As it is, Google clearly feels that offering "free mail client" functionality to external domains is a net loss, and would prefer not to do it. It's a proprietary product, they can offer whatever services they want.

The blocks that fustrate me more are tool permisissions. I ask to do something then flip to another screen and come back to see it never started

Auto permission is what ya need.

That’s how it seemed last year, but I never even took the type to look into it past hearing others discuss it on message boards or podcasts. I’ll be honest.

Just saw an ad for someone selling headless servers preloaded with OpenClaw that’ll sort your emails. A tool I really would like, particularly if it uses open models. Made me wonder if it’s time to investigate it and implementing what they’re selling.

you dont need open claw, any regular harness will do these days

the difference is mainly that you can interact with the agents via a phone chat app like telegram

Scion is an alternative I have my eye on

I'll be honest, i'm not up to date on the concept of a harness. Where should I look to learn more?

harness is the tool you interact with, like OpenCode. It's the thing that calls the llm API, has the system prompts, provides tools, etc

Those are all the things I have now. But thank you for offering your service

Waht is Hugging Face's protective moat?

Why can't everyone on it just move elesehwere?

Guess the answer is scale, same reason folks don't leave twitter/x.

Is open source just over? The number of AI-related open-source community driven projects I see caving to money is sad.
