Who can resist a sufficiently determined state that still enjoys popular support? All he has to do is engineer the support for "security" over the long term.
When resistance is so damn easy, and capitulation so self-destructive, who would co-operate? You could not force a Linux distro or Mozilla to distribute that cert. It could not be done.
[edit] https works based on trust. We trust the browsers and OS vendors to at least try to prevent the CAs from abusing their power. As soon as it becomes obvious that the OS and browser vendors are now letting state actors compromise all traffic, then https is dead in the water and something else will come along. Nobody is going to risk that happening. It would cost too many rich people too much money.
That's very well thought-out. The tinfoiler in me wonders if that's true, though, and if there aren't subtler avenues for circumvention that still target this trust-based system, especially via social engineering.
I had little interest in security before Snowden, so admittedly, I need to lurk moar and keep learning. Thanks for offering another argument I can try to fit against new facts I encounter and helping me continue that process.
While we're trotting out anecdotes, I have heard and experienced only the opposite.
One friend in particular who was given a windows phone by his large, seattle-based employer (ahem) had no end of trouble. The UI was great, but basic functionality was terrible. The thing could never handle SMS--we had to call him constantly, just to let him know what was going on, then we all would sporadically receive 4-5 texts from him that made no sense out of context. It was a nightmare.
It's a personnel matter, so reddit will never tell you, and she's likely bound by an agreement to never disclose.
My guess is not censoring the Jesse Jackson AMA when the users got nasty. I have another comment on this site that details what I suspect went down. You can search it out if you're really curious--I don't know how to permalink here.
Maybe also consume Twitter's firehose and use some combination of frequency of mention + some kind of influencer score (e.g., "verified" accounts and accounts with lots of followers are more heavily weighted) to determine hype. I've been wanting to built a sentiment analysis system for trading for a while now.
>1) Have one of the outputs be a box and whisker output showing the percentiles of ages the person will run out of money.
This is essential, and I wish it hadn't been overlooked. The only power of stochastic modeling over deterministic modeling is in quantifying the likelihood of outcomes in the outcome space.
Unfortunately, this requires either crazy stochastic math, or multiple computations (monte carlo methods). I suspect the op is a great guy and just hasn't been exposed to these ideas yet. When he does, he's going have that head-slapping moment we all have when we first encounter it.
She's not counting the loyal lurkers such as myself that have cut ourselves off completely. I have blocked reddit on all of my devices as a result of this ordeal. I'm curious if there are many others like me.
>In Sweden, he would get a fair trial at a european court. If his case even would go to trial. Then he would be extradited to the U.S. by treaty, where he would be exposed to the horrors of the American Justice System.
I'm not actively trying to denigrate the humanities, but when you go to college to study something which does not rely on objective measures of reality, or even truth, you end up with a highly disordered mind.
This sort of lexical scattergunning--a sentence appearing to follow all the rules of syntax and usage, but which is in reality drivel sprinkled with ten dollar words, is a classic marker.
People will continue to deal with GS, despite (maybe even because of) their ever worsening reputation, as long as they can convince themselves that they are the ones who are going to get rich while the other idiots are going to get ripped off. The incentive scheme is similar to that of a slot machine.
I just wish it were less obtuse to set up.
