it doesn't mean the local tech workers will be replaced.

You're right because that totally didn't happen to varying degrees in various industries in the US...

Without foreign workers, there may not even be big US tech companies as we know them. I really wish we could have these talents in Europe to boost our economy. This would create more jobs and more wealth ultimately.

We have the talent in Europe, they are just paid peanuts. If moving to the US was not an option, the balance on the labour market would be even worse (for the said talent).

It's not just newer unsustainable companies. There are plenty of businesses that have been around for decades that are now engaging in these enshittifying practices (for dearth of a better term). Big box appliances like washers/dryers, fridges. Vehicle manufacturers (BMW and their subscription service bullshit), we're fast approaching a world where even doing an oil change will have to be done by the dealership/authorized 3rd party.

These Ivy League MBAs have been getting taught how much money companies have been leaving on the table and they are infecting every industry.

Mobile-first design. Get used to it, we haven't even started to see the worst of it

The fact that this has a promotional image from someone using one of those One Laptop per Child laptops (which was an abject failure) just says to me this is another misguided "white savior" attempt to solve a problem in parts of the world they don't fully understand.

Agreed, pirate box was more fun.

This is 100% a political issue. Instead of introducing privacy-violating software, we could instead institute massive policing campaigns to curb speeding. But that would require actual effort by police, something they don't want to do.

Policing in a country filled to the brim with private firearms and a lot of people desperate to avoid serious consequences makes "massive policing campaigns" often lead to high-profile deaths.

Chicago tried to put cops in the CTA stations/trains and within weeks a man accused of "walking between CTA cars", techically a forbidden thing but commonplace and relatiely victimless, was shot in the back fleeing.

It's a political issue but really a design issue. Unfair speed limits do color our perception of speed limits in general, because they are often not set correctly for the design speed of the road, but are set correctly for the present danger certain speeds in that context exhibit. It is a warranted, justfied emotional reaction to the speed limit; we feel fine driving the design speed, yet are punished for making the road "unsafe". It's entirely reasonable to doubt it. The design speed should match, and even be slightly lower, than the intended speed limit of the road.

Also in Chicago, recently a 25mph speed limit failed to pass in the city council. I was all for it, but saddened the ordinance did nothing to demand local, county, and state DOTs to redesign roads. I live next to a very wide, four lane road with middle turn lane. The blanket speed limit in Chicago is 30mph. The road I live next too feels downright comical at 30mph. Everyone does 40 because it feels natural to do that. But at 30mph, I might die if I get hit crossing that road. At 40, it is all but guaranteed.

How is this different to driving around with a mobile phone on?

Are you serious? I can choose to leave my mobile phone home if I want to. I can't do that with my car.

Read about this singles dating event in Russia where they took cotton swabs swiped underneath each person's armpits and put them into little glass jars. Everyone then went around smelling each one and matched with each other based on which jar scent they liked the most. Wish I still had it. Definitely a novel if not more primal way to choose a partner.

does it really matter if it can be described as cognition or not?

Yes...it does. "AI" aka modern flavor LLMs as we understand them today are just doing certain things thats humans can do but orders of magnitude faster. What exactly is impressive about it being able to succinctly sum up any topic under the Sun aside from the speed? It will never create a new genre of music. It will never create a new style of art from the ground up. It lacks the human spark of ingenuity. To even suggest that what it does anything close to human cognition is egregiously insulting.

isn't it funny that half the time when you see criticism of LLMs it's almost like the words have been stolen from someone else?

the opinion you're parroting here completely misses the point of LLMs. their purpose is not to start artistic movements or liberally think for themselves and no one is claiming it is. their purpose is to accelerate information retrieval and translation and programming tasks, which they by and large are incredible at. even if they had the capacity to invent artistic movements, which in theory they most certainly do, starting an artistic movement is pretty much intrinsically a human thing, and it requires desire, inclination, trust and a grounding in the real world, such as it is. your "spark of ingenuity" is not lacking because of some issue or lack of creativity, it's lacking because it's not the point and no one wants it to be.

whether it is "cognition" or not is completely irrelevant to their purpose and use, and its a complete waste of time trying to litigate if it is or not because the word in itself is poorly defined. if you're trying to figure out if j=k but you can't define j or k, and you do know that k isn't a big factor in the usefulness of the system, then what is the point? is it jealousy? fear? I assure you, LLMs are not a threat to the special ingenuity of your mind

this opinion is the equivalent of watching the invention of the pocket calculator and complaining that it can't write calculus equations on a black board

their purpose is not to start artistic movements or liberally think for themselves and no one is claiming it is.

your "spark of ingenuity" is not lacking because of some issue or lack of creativity, it's lacking because it's not the point and no one wants it to be.

There are plenty of people/communities online that want it to be exactly that and want to remove the pesky human element from the equation. Dismissing them because it doesn't fit your argument doesn't mean they don't exist.

point to them

I see you are unable to point to them

got 'em

amusing

Yeah I see this kind of paternalistic condescending style of writing in many left-leaning circles. It sounds like it's geared for children but no they're actually writing for adults. They see themselves as moral beacons and they need to proselytize the stupid unwashed masses because they just don't know any better.

I despise it.

The style of this blog post probably owes a lot more to the author's career as an author of kids' books rather than to his political tendencies.

Jason Fung is probably the world's leading research expert on obesity. If you want videos to watch on it, it starts and ends with this guy. He has done a ton of lectures and blogposts going back over a decade, and also has the stereotypical clickbaity YouTube videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpllomiDMX0

He has surely dedicated a significant portion of his life to his own pet theories on obesity, but to consider him a well-regarded expert is very misleading.

He has quite a few claims that are just...ridiculous, and his pop science books have some serious flaws (as reported by actual experts).

While I don't doubt you, it would be helpful if you cited these experts, so people can learn.
