That’s because Patriots are typically upped, now downed.

If I had to guess, LinkedIn would be primarily searching for extensions that violate their terms of service (e.g. something that could be used to scrape data). They put a lot of effort into circumventing automated data collection. I could be wrong.

I can tell you exactly what it cost for me. I took the helicopter from Gorakshep, the highest/last town on the EBC trek, to Lukla, the crazy airport people call the most dangerous one in the world. For me, a 255 lbs / 115kg guy, 2 Nepalis that are each half my size, a pilot, and our not-that-heavy hiking gear was 2000 USD in October of 2024.

probably mean 255 lb / 115kg

Yes, thanks for noticing. I fixed.

Nothing beats good quality, freshly sourced, all natural ground truth data

To be honest I'm surprised insurance is offered at all. I did the EBC trek a couple years ago. The temptation to take a helicopter down was real & I didn't have insurance.

Rescue insurance was required by the trekking company when I did EBC a few years back.

Yeah, I think most reputable places do require it, and there are restricted areas they won’t issue permits for without verifying insurance. It was required by our outfitter when we did the Annapurna circuit a few years ago.

I presume if Elon sets up a CDN, the IP will be 20.20.20.20.

I was talking to one of the people who works at a big agentic coding tools. If I recall correctly, he was talking about how they use the tool to build the tool. I was complaining that all of the websites/frontends I make look pretty weak, and I'm amazed they get much slicker looking UIs with the same tool. He showed me that one way they do it is by having an extensive UI library of components/graphics/whatever, and also mentioned that the folks build their UIs know how to prompt/use the tool because it's backed by years of UI development knowledge & superior resources. I realized I didn't have any of that, and it actually made me feel better.

Last week we I was struggling to go from vague prompt to a OMG-it's-so-nice-looking web app, I remembered that example above and then decided to create my own component library, which I did in a couple days: https://www.substrateui.dev/. I was actually super happy that I was able to accomplish that, and then I realized I wanted to better understand the content that I had vibe coded into existence. So now I'm recreating that design system step by step w/ Claude code, filling in gaps in my knowledge & learning a bit about colors, typography, CSS, blah blah blah. It's actually a lot of fun because I'm able to explore all of the concepts and learn enough to build a front end that doesn't suck & is good enough for my use case without getting stuck for days on trying to center a stupid div by hand or play whack-mole-fix-something-and-break-something-else when trying to clean up AI slop.

that's really awesome. how did you go about building the component library?

I was referencing https://www.neobrutalism.dev/ and https://www.retroui.dev/ and slopped my way through it. A lot of it was just asking Claude Code "is this a proper design system?", then I kept doing that until it didn't have anything useful to add. Now I'm using my that as the template for understanding such things in more detail.

He has an army of people that would read his emails. A truly important one should get read.

You could always try calling, too! I cold called Marc Benioff at Salesforce and he actually picked up the phone.

This needs a story. What did you say to him?

This was maybe 20 years ago. I was looking for a job as a recruiter and just called him. He referred me to an HR rep and I did get an interview from it. Didn’t get the job, but hey, I got a shot!

He was told, he had a call from Pope

Heh, classic Mike (not the Pope one)

Completely off topic. I went solo hiking in Azerbaijan in August of 2022, heading towards some hilltop castle thing I saw on Google Maps. Along the way I met some locals who invited me to join them. We got to the castle around midday and I was preparing to walk back to my car alone, and they all strongly advised against it. They said it was dangerous and invited me to go camping with them, which was pretty fun as they gave me my own tent, food, etc. While at the campground, one guy pulled out his phone to show me pictures of the local wildlife, including a big ol' brown bear. I was too stupid to think about what might eat me out in the woods alone, as I lacked the instinct to check for man-eating predators having grown up in an area where I didn't need to worry about such things.

Anyway, now I think about bears before solo hiking.

They are also organic, all-natural, and fat-free! And renewable on geological timescales.

Contrary to windmills, which slows down the rotation of the earth.

Doesn't that depend whether you point them east or west?

Point them north and you'll increase Earth's axial tilt.

I think you just solved both leap seconds and daylight savings time.

I personally would like more hours in the day.

No problem: Just build a subterranean boat and launch a few nukes close to the core to restart rotation.

Won't someone think of the ~children~ birds?!

If I had to guess, which I do, I'd say that it's not a big deal that an adversary capable of threatening an aircraft carrier knows where it generally is. What is a big deal is knowing precisely where it is when an undetected projectile needs pinpoint accuracy moments before blowing a big hole in it.

It’s impossible for any projectile to come towards an aircraft carrier of the US and not be detected. Technically impossible. You’re only hope is that they don’t have CIWS turned on. A 20mm Vulkan cannon of computerized vision models pointed right at you.

> computerized vision models

The CIWS is radar guided.

Modern ones are broad-spectrum optical.

Let them keep thinking a radar jammer will work…
