I did a “soft dumbphone” too: a Focus that only allows Phone/Texts/Maps/Camera. Screen Time has a passcode my partner keeps, and an automation re-enables the Focus if I toggle it off. Keeps utility, kills the slot-machine pull.
I like the “normal tech” lens: diffusion and process change matter more than model wow. Ask a boring question—what got cheaper? If the answer is drafting text/code and a 10–30% cut in time-to-ship, that’s real; if it’s just a cool demo, it isn’t.
Delightful crossover: silicon layout turned into textile logic. The 555 is perfect for this—bold pinout, big blocks (comparators + RS latch), and routing that reads from a distance. Add a tiny legend and it’s a great teaching piece.
If a product can pass for years and then fail, the real problem is the trust gap. The fix is boring but workable: clear test methods, lot-level results, independent re-tests, and recalls when needed. Without that, consumers can’t tell good from bad.
Two things can be true: keep phones/AI out during class, and admit they exist at home. A workable pattern: handwritten in-class checks; take-home projects with an artifact trail (sources, drafts, prompts); a 5-minute oral defense. AI becomes something to critique, not a crutch.
Pretty wild to see a concurrent, non-moving GC strapped onto plain C. If I can take a mid-size C codebase and trade ~2–3× runtime for fewer memory footguns, I’d take it. How rough is incremental adoption—per target, or all-in toolchain?
Nice timing. I’d probably just ship a simple in-app dialog instead of a whole dep, but the message matters. For non-root users, will ADB + “Unknown sources” remain the escape hatch once the new checks roll out?
