It is technically not the arch way to use aur helper, but I use paru instead of pacman which shows arch news before updating.

This makes sure I get any arch news before potential breaking updates.

So why do we ask them? AFAIK, it is engineers asking these questions and also criticizing the same metric.

I think it is a case of this being the least worst option.

I haven't personally used this, but does this work?

GC.TryStartNoGCRegion Method

Attempts to disallow garbage collection during the execution of a critical path.

Pretty sure that is wired up like an elevator close button. Never seen it make a difference and not for lack of trying.

If anyone is curious, it might be this talk.

Does an approved H1-B extension necessarily extends the i-94 date?

If not, is the only alternative to leave the country, get a new visa stamp(which is not possible till Dec 31, AFAIK) and reenter the country?

If it is filed with a request for extension of status and not consular notification, then yes. The approval notice will indicate which and have an I-94 attached at the bottom if an extension. If it's filed with a request for consular notification, then you will need to leave the US and get a new H-1B visa and then reenter to activate it. I assume that when you say extension, you mean with the same employer?

Thanks!

Yes it is for the same employer. It will be with extension of status, and not consular notification, AFAIK, so that clears up my situation.

AFAIK it does extend the i-94 but you still need a visa stamp to reenter the US

Thanks. I am in US and don't have any travel plans now.

Was wondering if I'll have to leave and come back to get valid I-94, which will be tricky due to the Executive Order on visas.

H1-B has other issues but regarding H1-B working for 10+ years, it is mostly due to country caps for green cards.

H1-B do get sponsored green cards, at least for the non-startup companies. IIRC, any H1-B having more than one extension i.e. > 6 years has to have a green card application pending. H1-B doesn't have country caps.

The green card system however has per country caps, which impacts primarily people born in India, China, Mexico,El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Vietnam and Philippines. If you are born in Greece and come to USA on H1-B where a company sponsors green card for you, you would get it in around 1-3 years.

Source: Was born in India and also had a roommate from Greece who got green card in about 14 months after being in USA.

EDIT: Added El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Vietnam to list of countries impacted based on https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/v...

and you'll have to GTFO the US within (IIRC) 2 weeks.

I think there was a grace period of 60 days introduced in 2017 though I am not sure on the status of it now.

It's a one-time grace period, not 60 days cumulative over a lifetime. The second time you get laid off without a new job in hand no grace period for you.

I don't think r/the_donald is quarantined.

There was some issue with sticky threads not rising as much to the r/all that impacted r/the_donald, but otherwise, I can still see posts from that sub on the front page though I do have to scroll quite a bit.

Does Steam take a cut for in game purchases? I think the major issue here is with companies having app stores inside app store. All the companies mentioned i.e Amazon, Steam seem to allow in-app purchases at a scale quite different than normal apps. It does seem weird that if I am purchasing an item through Steam's app store, Steam has to pay Apple.

I mean it would be like Amazon paying Apple a cut, if I buy a TV from amazon. AFAIK, it is only for digital goods that Apple charges, but I am not sure how the demarcation works.

On the flip side, if Apple/Google allow any app to use in-app purchases without a commission, then all apps will use in-app purchases for everything.

> Does Steam take a cut for in game purchases?

Yes. That's why they cut out remote control purchasing feature from their iOS app, to avoid hypocrisy charges and to avoid the sticky situation where a steam app tried the same (letting you make microtransaction purchases by remoting in to your phone or something).

Same as why Epic dropped their marketplace cut down from 30% something like one week before their "30% is unfair" press campaign which in turn was used to take the spotlight off criticism of Fortnite's release on Android as a timed exclusive with Samsung's new flagship.
