What do you think the purpose of federation is? I like federation because I can choose a server I like or run my own and still talk to people on other servers.


Trouble with doing it all through phones:

- Data plans. Everyone connecting to your blog through your phone would use up a hell of a lot of data.

- iPhones are notoriously hostile to P2P apps, so that rules out about half of all smartphone users.

There are other issues but those are the most significant imo.


That's not listed as an advantage - just highlighting the technology.


My bad. I conflated the technology and pros section in my mind.


I'm a member of community Slack rooms with hundreds of people. It would cost thousands of dollars a month to switch to paid accounts. That's way too high for volunteer open source projects to pay.


The ones that support XMPP can probably have an OTR plugin built for them. Might be able to develop an Axolotl plugin too.
