Who is out there launching new Reddit alternatives that could catch on?

Great article. Another problem with Meta’s moderation on political topics is they block content worldwide rather than in the united states only

AI scaring students away from the software field and simultaneously making it hard for new developers to learn (because its too temping to click a button rather than struggle for 30 minutes) could be balancing out some job losses as well

I had an issue with calibre+dedrm not working as of early 2024 (possibly due to an update the the DRM used by Amazon). Have you had luck doing this recently?

I just tried it and it did NOT work for me. The Calibre page says it doesn't work on Macs and points to some paid software to remove DRM. Really disappointing.

no I've not used it for a while, and I never will after the 26th.

This is the premise of the short story 'The lifecycle of software objects' by Ted Chiang. In that story the employees of the company take it upon themselves to maintain their human-like pets. If the concept of future AI/robot friends like this 'dying' is of interest to you give this story a read: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7886338-the-lifecycle-of...

Ditto the shelter for obsolete dinosaur-toys story by Chwedyk (2001) https://www.reddit.com/r/BKCNoSpace/comments/rkkl80/the_meas...

Also check out the lovely novel Klara And The Sun, about a solar powered AI robot friend, gifted to a sickly child.

I came to comment this. It was a weird story, to be honest. Like I didn't know where it was going, but at the same time I couldn't stop reading it. Highly recommended it.

Beat me to it!
