We cant even criticize Israel online. Censorship is war crime

You must be joking. It will take about 5 minutes for technology to render this obsolete. Authoritarians always use innocuous sounding reasons to implement censorship. It starts with pirates, then onto dissenters.

China's great firewall got us shadowsocks and v2ray. Shadowsocks is interesting because, if I understand it correctly, its obfuscation (plugin?) method makes the firewall think I'm browsing github or some other innocuous website I set. I wonder what new advancements in censorship circumvention we'll get when the western firewalls go up. Never mind overt talks of combatting piracy or protecting children or whatnot. That's where announcements like this are headed.

Is shadowsocks still actively maintained? Last I saw their repo was abandoned, but maybe someone forked it and I missed it.

100% correct. This at best will only stop casual and inadvertent clicks to piracy sites.

And harder yet is to define piracy itself - Should the Canadian government be protecting copyright not under its purview? How about US copyright? Or European? What about Chinese copyright? Will the Canadian government protect from corporate pirates that pirate the Linux kernel for use in hardware where they do not release source under GPL terms? (Likely not)

And all of their blocking measures cannot stop at "Stop piracy". We see what happens in schools - all blocking engines ALSO have to block VPN, Proxy, Tor, and "proxy avoidance" to even approach effectiveness... And those also are easy to bypass.

Usually, what these kinds of laws are for are as a "feel good", and for shoveling money to someone's pet company for a lackluster "blocking" solution.

Or this is just another scam to hand out a big $ contract to some IT consultant to implement this.

Except that nothing has been proposed here. This is a RFP.

It's still being done in US and abroad. Never ended. The evidence from Tuskegee to Margaret Sanger's vision is irrefutably still in use.

Fraud much?

Pelosi's nephew. Go figure.

Covid 1984 is bullshit. Damn I used to think Stallman was intelligent. 99.99% survival rate. I guess I have to vote Trump to get you morons off your fake covid non-scientific fear campaign

"99.99% survival rate"

If it had a 99.99% survival rate, it would mean only 1 out of 10,000 people infected with COVID-19 died.

200k people in the US have died of COVID-19. Mulitply 200k deaths by 10,000 and you get 2 billion people in the US infected with COVID-19. The US has a population of only about 330 million.

> population of 330k

99.9% would have been more precise, which aligns well with the current numbers.

The term "survival rate" applies to the infected, not the entire population. When a plane wipes out against a mountain in the Andes, you don't use the population of the entire country to claim that the survival rate of the crash was high, you count only the people who were actually in the plane.

So 209,454 deaths suggests a 96% survival rate[0], based on our current information.

Perhaps more to the point, since humans are generally bad at visualizing statistics, 209,454 people have died, making COVID-19 the third-highest cause of death[1] in the USA this year so far.

Survival rate = 1-Ifr. Ifr is ~0.1% so 99.9% is right. There were no 200k corona deaths in the US.

There have been more than 200k deaths from COVID-19, and the year is not yet over. I linked to information supporting the number I gave.

I actually think the number is a bit higher, since not all deaths triggered by COVID-19 are necessarily reported with COVID-19 as a comorbidity[0]. But there are certainly not fewer!

Don't misrepresent the seriousness of the pandemic to justify your choice to vote for Trump. Just vote for him if you want to vote for him, but be honest about it.

You are dead wrong about COVID-19, as rudimentary math should tell you.

So woke they are unable to learn foreign languages.

Thank you. Tracing our every move and our every thought is a clear human rights violation. Slavery is alive and well.

probably wise to have a new word for it other than slavery, though I sympathize with the sentiment.

Even more so because actual(old school) slavery still exists in a lot of places.

* surveillery * digital captivity * chains of surveillance

I think webs is more palatable than chains.

Yes, economic slavery. Perfect word to describe the situation, regardless how hurt some might feel or think about it. Let's call it what it is.

> Tracing our every move and our every thought is a clear human rights violation.

Not being snarky, but under which legal system? Maybe in the EU to some extent? AFAIK, the U.S. does not classify privacy as a human right, though there are people who believe it should be.

Human rights, unless explicitly protected by a society's law, do not exist in a practical sense.

This is not true. A two second search on duckduckgo had a dozen doctors explaining to me why this was wrong. Even Fauci himself says it. CDC also said it. Even places with no lockdown did better than Michigan and New York. No masks did not make the difference.

Facebook needs to be regulated. They dont allow dissent or opinions that oppose their own. While controlling the vast majority of social media.
