I love Pirx and having a Polish connection in my life I think gave me a richer appreciation even of a translation. Definitely going to check out more Lem after reading this thread. And can't agree more on Lem's prescience - the lovely thing is that my enjoyment whilst reading was never broken by picking holes in the descriptions around technology. Thank you Lem.

Yeah he's a lovely chap. I remember him making hateful comments about a British swimmer called Rebecca Adlington's face a while back. She won a gold medal at the Olympics - so wtf does it matter if she has a big nose, and who tf is he to criticise her? Somehow his lefty fans choose to overlook the misogyny and hatred when it's mixed in with enough politically correct, anti-Trump etc. material.

Highly amused at how you have illustrated the bovine predictability of the HN hivemind. The HN crowd smugly pats itself on the back as being smarter and more enlightened than the average bear, yet in practice is tremendously narrow minded and hateful of anything that goes against its prevailing norms. The diversity agenda apparently does not include diversity of thought.

There is no "HN crowd" in that sense. This is a common illusion, known as the Hostile Media Effect:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostile_media_effect

https://hn.algolia.com/?query=%22hostile%20media%20effect%22...

People with opposite views have opposite images of the "HN crowd". Since these images are determined by your/their own views, they don't contain any information about HN.

And so you prove my point yet even a step removed - to even mention that mentioning that a collective narrowmindedness might exist incurs criticism, is not permitted.

Arguably a step forward for feminism also

Ellen Pao also

Ellen Pao was an excellent CEO. The subs she got rid of were hateful and she didn't believe in editing comments. The current CEO won't ban subs inciting violence and instead gets rid of peaceful ones trading individual bottles of beer.

Video is superior on mirrorless though.

That's not because of the cameras being mirrorless; it's because (for Canon anyway) they purposely gimp video on their DSLRs to get you to buy their Cine-EOS cameras.

Which is why all the kids these days are using Magic Lantern and unlocking the actual potential of DSLRs by shooting uncompressed 14-bit "raw" video.

Not working though is it? Mirrorless are making huge strides in video

Strides which do not result from them being mirrorless. You should understand that the mirror does not get involved at all when doing video with a DSLR. So, all of these 'strides' can and have been replicated in the next version of the cameras.

I'm not sure what your point is - it's mirrorless that have really pushed the tech on here at least at the cheaper end of the market. It's my understanding that Lumix G range for example has been widely adopted for video in a way that SLR has not. Are you saying these users will defect to SLR with a new generation? Can't really see why, since all that going SLR would do is introduce some extra mechanics they don't need.

I rented a US built sedan a while back. I remember being amused at the huge panel gaps, cheap plastic everywhere giving off a strong chemical odour, and the fact the thing carried on rocking on its super soft suspension noticeably after you came to a halt. I cannot fathom why anyone would buy something like that rather than a BMW for example if the prices were similar, bar extreme patriotism.

> rather than a BMW for example if the prices were similar

They aren't.

> US built sedan

Tesla?

Very odd use of the word Landing.

"Landing a feature" is common way of phrasing that a feature has been added. For example, one might say that "C++17 support has landed in master", referring to the master branch for LLVM.

OK, we'll s/land/add/ the title above.
