my own anecdotal experience with magnesium : i was generally prone to leg cramps even when young that usually subsides when i take salty water. i had developed hyperthroidism in late 90s that was treated eventually with radio-iodide. subsequently i went into hypothyroid state. soon after was a violent cramps episode which became regular that even if i took few hundred steps my legs would start cramping up. A steep descent into quality of life had me try many many tests as the initial suspicion was some kind of clot. Quite painful nerve conduction velocity tests were done. I was the subject of academic curiosity at stanford hospital. I was on codeine and other pain medications. After a year of this, one day happened to talk to a regular doctor (no specialization), who treats patients from asian subcontinent. He said that i may have magnesium deficiency which was apparently common for my ethnic background. Since by that time i had tried everything, this was an easy choice. Just a couple of weeks in with cal-mag citrate (400mg/day), felt something different in my legs and the whole nigthmare just lifted. I was able to return to hikes etc and would only occasionally need magnesium. It has been 2 decades since, and i dont take magnesium anymore and do strenous workouts and never again triggered any cramps episode.

Seems like you would benefit from magnesium no? Our bodies don’t produce it (correct me if I’m mistaken).

Magnesium Glycinate makes me sleep like a baby at night.

I took glycinate for a while. Deep sleep with lots of dreams. But soon followed extreme pressure in head with severe headache that i completely stopped.

For a person (my daughter) who has tried everything under sun (except ECT and psilocybin)for depression and OCD and nothing ever seemed to help, what is the latest on treatment horizon?

Psychedelics + cognitive therapy has a lot of promise. There's a lot of types of psychedelics and therapies to investigate. MDMA with a group of close friends/family in a safe and loving environment is probably the best you could do on your own.

Personally, cold exposure + lots of coffee + engaging work w/ others has been more effective than anything I've found in the healthcare system. Commit to daily work/social obligations, then drink enough coffee until you can will yourself to go everyday. Once it starts to become a habit is when my depression (slowly) will start to lift. If I stop for too long I fall back into the hole.

Have you considered any alternative explanations/diagnosis? Rates of misdiagnosis for psychiatric disorders are significant (even more so in women, anecdotally) and it could be the reason why the treatments aren't working. Depression can manifest as a consequence of untreated ADHD, for example.

Self-diagnosis is generally frowned upon but I think everyone owes it to themselves to at least try to find explanations that they can discuss with professionals.

we tried many avenues here as well 1.vitamin deficiency (she is vitamin D deficient, but it seems common in my race - asian 2. iron deficiency 3. gave magnesium for a while 4. someone diagnosed her for adhd and others disagreed 5. tested for autism. 6. tested for thyroid 7. took some T3/T4

i am thinking we will self pay an MRI.

years ago doing similar thing found out my type2 diabetes when i was 24. It has been a life saver since i am able to manage it before any complication.

One reason i find these posts useful is if you are at wits end and desperate. My daughter has been diagnosed with depression (and ocd and anxiety). We have tried multiple medications, therapy (CBT, ERP), TMS(self paid because the f#ing insurance wont cover at the time), probiotics,.. Nothing has seemed to help. I look for any avenue that i can explore that brings her relief. Now i look at a comment for poor methylation and that is something we havent checked. Maybe it will help. As long as we always do it with medical professional advice, there is good in knowing the issues involved. No one cares more than the person and family suffering.

That was my comment about methylation? It's currently at +1, maybe you upvoted to balance out a down-vote? ;)

How old is your daughter? Is she on birth control, either for being a fertile woman who doesn't want to be pregnant (i.e., to sabotage her fertility) or to treat dysmenorrhea?

My friend's health was sabotaged with depot provera, the time-release endocrine disruptor. Progesterone is a very important brain hormone. Progesterone USP is a synthetic version of what the body makes for itself.

Sometimes all a person needs to improve their metabolism is real b-vitamins from whole wheat sourdough bread (slow yeast -> natural b-vitamins, instead of synthetic b-vitamins).

You can contact me through Twitter - I have more ideas about solving depression. My username is at the bottom of my Mad In America essay (link in my other comment).

I have always had insomnia for 20+ years. It all started with becoming hyperthyroid and subsequently hypo (with radio iodide). I was able to bring it under control with cbt-i. But i find that if i have a special event (it could be a day trip, meeting etc) next day, i cannot sleep even a wink. And sure enough suffer the next day. The best i can describe the feeling when trying to sleep is either sitting in a tree branch and not trying to fall or driving and trying to stay alert. I have managed so far, but i am not able to sleep before any job interview while i am trying to change job. (all the leetcode questions are not helping)

Have you tried any exercise or diet combinations? Curious to understand what didn’t work.

Due to health conditions, i do cardio 60 min/day every day. dumbbell weight training 3x/week. Vegetarian by bringup, didnt try anything new nutritional, because no one suggested.

FWIW I did a keto cycle and found myself sleeping much better when I was getting into the fat adaption phase.

Also after wearing my Garmin to gauge heart rate and sleep effectiveness I found refined carbs eaten late in the evening keep me up at night.

So might be worth experimenting and seeing if anything effects your sleep positively.

a sleep specialist told me, i am ovetthinking and i cannot will sleep into existence. He recommended that i do cbt-i. He emphatically ruled out physical tiredness does not necessarily mean mental tiredeness. As i mentioned cbt-i for most part worked, but when the next day there is a significant event, i cannot sleep a wink. I was told (by my primary) to take some anti anxiety pills that did not help much. i dont like sleeping pills as i feel groggy next day almost as if i never slept, even melatonin has that effect.

did you check your thyroid levels.

when the cas (compare and swap) succeeds in user space, the subsequent futex call to wait will not be made, i suppose.

I had a different problem. On my wife's account she started receiving someone else's emails. Initially we suspected that her email was wrongly(typo) used in registration at various sites. But increasingly we noticed that the conversations in the mails were ongoing, implying continued usage of her address. We suspected her email was hacked and changed password, that didnt help. Eventually she had to abandon that email. The problem with free mail service is that the support you get is what you pay for.

what do HN folks think about efforts of Dr david sinclair of https://sinclair.hms.harvard.edu/ ?

i dont know about this. i cant get on the treadmill/elliptical unless there is some soccer match or action film streaming on the tv.... I could focus on the pain of doing exercise but that seems to be counter productive...

Actually, next time, why not try focusing on the pain? I do this sometimes when I run. Instead of trying to ignore the pain, really focus on it, and sense what it is about it that’s discomforting, and when you realize that it’s not going to harm you in any significant way, it kind of loses its power over you and you sort of accept it and keep going.

I think it depends on your goals. If what you want is achieve better movement, you’d better turn off that TV.

But if you just want to burn fat, well I’m not sure that focusing on it would change anything.

Proprioception is a nice thing to exercise, though.

Focus on your breathing. Correct breathing takes effort but pays dividend in endurance.
