Michael Levin's labs, where this research is going on, showed organ (eg. eyes) regeneration etc. I really hope these guys are going in right direction regarding regeneration based on electric fields as a proxy for gene expressions.

I learned of Michael Levin via Sally Adee's "We Are Electric", one of the more interesting pop-sci titles I've read in a while, the section on Levin's lab was definitely the highlight.

I don't like idolization of rich people. Yea, Woz was great for the contribution to computing.

He did sell out though, launching a billion dollar crypto ico which is now at a valuation of around million dollar. Sure anyone would be happiest person ever.

genuinely interested, what are the alternatives ? i know ping/forgerock and some old ibm stuff.

what is state of the art today that compares to ActiveDirectory (not talking azureAd - or whatever they call it these days) ?

Samba4 is the closest you can get. It is not as nice as ActiveDirectory.

> Samba is an important component to seamlessly integrate Linux/Unix Servers and Desktops into Active Directory environments. It can function either as an Active Directory Domain Controller or as a member server.

What's something that AD provides that this does not?

It certainly sounds like an (almost) drop-in replacement.

Samba4 covers core AD features like Kerberos, LDAP, and can act as a DC, but it’s not a full drop-in. GPO support is limited, management tools aren’t as robust (no full RSAT equivalent), and some advanced AD features (like DAC or ADCS) aren’t supported. Fine for smaller setups, but not 1:1 with enterprise AD.

Why not Okta? I know a company that uses it and no AD. (But they are mostly Mac)

The name reminds me of the south park episode with trapper keeper :)

was a crazy episode

I responded above, but it could be used maybe for network libraries for eg. libvirt. I did my thesis on this topic a couple years ago.

I am very intrigued to find out how this would fit in, if at all.

Absolutely my thought as well. During my thesis i found token buckets to be better and more fair compared to other algos[1]. This was in libvirt. my finding was that it scaled well up to around 1k buckets if memory serves right. after that the results were weird to say the least. (of course the servers i tested on were quite old with not too much memory). Would be nice to run my thesis tests again to find what happened in the last decade.

I tried writing another algorithm for network splitting but didn't get any better results. [1]: https://www.csg.uzh.ch/publications/details.php?id=1007

exactly. I see it as well in multiple other spots as well. eg: 1. 05 49 04.008 +01 09 47.27 FoV: 1.3° X 2.2° 2. 05 44 35.074 +01 52 52.36 FoV: 3.4° X 5.9° 3. 06 37 17.795 -47 18 20.97 FoV: 1.4° X 2.4°

many more that i didnt list.

where does it say in your links that these people were part of the team that designed chips in the 90s ? Are these wrong links maybe ?

Here's Rajeev Chandrashekar's interview with IIT/IllinoisTech which he is an alum of - https://magazine.iit.edu/fall-2012/ahead-curve

Vaishnaw wasn't on the chips side. He's Engineering Management (GE and Siemens and a Wharton grad)

"He was handpicked by Vinod Dham to join Intel and worked there from 1988 to 1991. At Intel he was part of the architectural team that designed the i486 processor."

I recently started learning about ai after seeing it everywhere including hearing it from my close relatives. I had been extremely worried to use it for plagiarism, what do people on HN think about it? This video by a youtuber, makes it quite murky for me to use any AI for my work except asking it some questions. Thanks

This is really nice.

Would be great if you can also include some examples for Europe.

Of couse, i would be up to do some digging if you need help.

Thank you! I put what little I knew in https://reportphonespam.org/#not-in-the-us-or-canada , but that's not much :-) I'd welcome any other ideas or additions. My email address is in my HN profile.

One of the carrier lookup APIs that the site recommends, Twilio's "Line Type Intelligence" API, may support numbers in other countries. That might be a place to start: https://reportphonespam.org/#How-do-I-look-up-more-numbers

Do you get unsollicited phone calls in Europe? In Czechia it almost never happens, maybe once every three months...
