I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s violent and some pornography is good for most people. It’s not going to kill or murder or whatever people.
But what’s been happening lately with onlyfans and other things is a recipe for a disaster in my mind. We’ve made it hard for younger generations, made paths to success much less atrainable and instead have enabled black markets while the economy suffers because of it. I imagine we’re stuck with a deranged and broken society of people moonlighting to make ends meet by doing soft porno in far greater numbers than before. And yes of course that’s what strip clubs are for but that was way less of an issue than this.
Pretty much. Small-time chicken owner here. The best ratio of hens to roosters is about 10-to-1. Each rooster will have his "harem" of hens that keep him busy, and the hens will be content. Any more roosters than that and they'll fight a lot, and the roosters that don't have their own group of hens will hang around the others looking for a chance to rape them while their regular rooster is occupied or too far away. It can be pretty hard on the hens.
I've never had a rooster kill hens, though. Each other, sure, but not the hens. I don't really buy that.
Some context for this article that most people don't know: there are chicken breeds for meat (Cornish Cross, mostly) and breeds for eggs. The egg breeds are skinny and won't become a good meat bird no matter how much you feed them. I guess you can caponize them and they'll gain more weight, but that's a process that costs money. You could use them for soup, but that probably wouldn't be cost-effective either, so that's why the large-scale operations just kill them.

It seems like a sick joke of nature that a species that behaves this way wouldn't also naturally be born in a similar ratio. I wonder if they're like that in the wild, too....
There's no real such thing as a "natural" chicken, but their ancestors, red junglefowl, are similar. In fact, healthier females produce more males (https://academic.oup.com/auk/article/119/3/840/5561973). Perhaps it's evolutionary turned out to be good for fitness of the species if 90% of the males are killed by other males or otherwise don't mate and that outweighs "wasting" 4.5/10 eggs. Nature doesn't "care" (yes, yes, active verb for non-conscious process) if it's pretty, just that it works.
In general, life in nature just ain't that fun as a junior member of an r-selected species, which includes chickens.
Sadly HN has never been of much value to me despite my first account being almost of drinking age. Yes, having people like Nagle (animats) and other hardcore experts who know what they’re talking about is great. But they’re an extreme rarity in a sea of absolute shit. You want to talk about enshittification? Just take a look at the nosedive of HN. So yeah, for me it’s usually more insightful to do a deep dive with an LLM. Before that, of course, the Wikipedia rabbit holes were I think a staple of the internet.
LLMs for me to a large degree satisfy the “hacker curiosity” that HN guidelines wank over but betray with every bullshit upvoted and gamed clickbait post. It’s a search engine that flattens rabbit holes for me and makes traversing the corpus of information out there very enjoyable.
People complaining about a
LLMs being scrapers is to me just amusing to the point of nonsensical. The entire point is to use it as a discovery engine that brought the most common and the most obscure on the same level of accessibility.
Not a customer but it’s a shame it’s not working out for them. I’m sure they have people who would enjoy it but the feedback I’ve heard was mostly negative with respect to quality of ingredients and the like.
At this stage if they scaled back would they stand a chance to survive? Or do they owe too much money?
They owe way too much. The article actually touches on this - they have such little hope of paying back their debt that they are leaning into this so that they can get better renegotiation terms with bond holders
As a network programmer who has written a metric asston of concurrent parallel asynchronous whatever-the-hell code [0], this article is confusing. It seems like doing somersaults over a leaky abstraction. The tool for the job is wrong and its implementation is wrong if you can shit the bed this easily.
[0] debugging is fun precisely because it’s amusing to watch people be frightened of having to debug multi threaded hydras.
Oh yeah I have one of these installed at my place. Every time I walk in I hear a cha-ching from their mobile app. Another $250! It’s like free money in my pocket.
This seems like a fairly ORM 100-level thing. Read the documentation that comes with your ORM I guarantee it has a best practices section and a performance considerations section. N+1 is trivial and widely covered by every ORM as it’s a common thing. nb I use entity framework so ymmv, but EF Core especially newer versions with one-way updates and deletes have been good to me and migrations aren’t half bad either. The code is I think much easier on the eyes than python/django but that’s a personal pref.
