I don’t agree with the policies around land without compensation but the economic prosperity that the people of the USSR and PRC experienced after instating those policies can not be denied.

You mean the prosperity of China, which is about one-third the prosperity of, say, South Korea, which started out in about the same place? Ah! I regret that it only seems impressive because the nation is very large.

Oh! But perhaps you mean those heady years of growth during the Great Leap Forward itself, where the nation became so prosperous that ~45 million people starved to death.

Do you have sources to backup this often repeated rhetoric?

I don’t think you can downplay the role of foreign capital and multi-nationals In South Africa’s economic problems for the past two decades - for example the role that The Guptas, McKinsey and KPMG all played in looting the state.

> for example the role that The Guptas, McKinsey and KPMG all played in looting the state.

Who made that possible? The voters, who voted for Zuma and the ANC and gave them a legislative super majority, who then in turn gave the Guptas all the power that they managed to get and either looked the other way or more likely were complicit in the Gupta's corrupt dealings with KPMG and McKinsey.

Without South African politicians selling out the South Africans who voted for them, the Guptas, KPMG and McKinsey would be entirely irrelevant. But I'm sure these facts won't prevent South Africans from lynching some more foreigners.

Are you saying that wealth extraction from Africa to its former colonial masters does not happen anymore?

> Are you saying that wealth extraction from Africa to its former colonial masters does not happen anymore?

Nothing happening to the wealth of South African today is happening without explicit authorization by a political party that have had a legislative majority and/or super majority for almost 30 years. Pointing fingers at the west for what South Africans do to other South Africans won't fix any problems South Africa has.

I agree with your assessment. A common miss conception I’ve seen visiting foreigners have about Dutch bikes are because they used bad rental bikes while visiting. Most of the rental bikes are quite bad; lack of gears, awkward dimensions and incredibly heavy.

The video we're discussing extolls the virtues of a heavy, gearless, coaster-brake bike.

You are somewhat correct. Official statistics on murders broken down by race and land ownership are difficult to find so it makes having a conversation on the topic difficult. The statistics that are available on white farm murders indicate that their murder rate is within the average for for rural/farm areas. Infact the murder rate of black men in rural areas is even higher then white farmers.

This statment is factually incorrect and is a common alt-right talking point that is repeated on the internet with little factual basis in reality.

There are a few reasons for this;

* Different definitions of rape across countries and time

* Rape offences are counted differently

* An echo-chamber effect - lazy journalism

* Under-reporting rates are unknown and are often extrapolated by Statistics South Africa

It seems like sexual violence in SA is very high, I don't see how you can claim otherwise after reading the Wikipedia entry. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_violence_in_South_Afric...

You are correct, violence and sexual violence are a big issue in South Africa. By no means was I trying to say that it isn’t but there’s a big difference between being a “rape capital” and having high rates of sexual violence.

The term “rape/murder capital of the world” is often perpetrated and encouraged by neo-nazi pundits to stoke “white fear” with miss representations of the facts. This is why it’s important to understand the nuances and context of these statistics inorder to avoid falling into the dogmatic conversations.

You could counter this argument by saying that to minimize the problem is anti feminist. The term "rape capital" indeed sounds hyperbolic but maybe it will help mobilize the people in charge there to do something about it.

Thanks, will read it.

On the other note, please refrain from such lame attempts at "guilty by association" tactic. No need to drag your local boogie man into international discussion.

Apologies I didn’t mean to paint you as such. I went ahead and edited my original post to be less aggressive.

I just wanted to point out that this is a frequent talking point peddled by American neo-nazies that is frustratingly repeated on the internet with little honest interrogation.
