Fenix International | Lead Software Engineer | Kampala, Uganda or San Francisco, CA | http://www.fenixintl.com/

Want to make a real difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands across Africa? Interested in solar power and/or financial services for the developing world? Come work at Fenix! We have a team of 6 Software Engineers and are looking to hire a new Lead Software Engineer who can lead the team (spread across San Francisco and Uganda) in building out our financial platform (a Django web application) as well as a few other software products. We like Django (and Python generally), Node.js, and AWS.

We're hiring for either San Francisco or Kampala, Uganda -- if you were based in SF, travel to Kampala a few times a year would be necessary (and weekend trips to go rafting on the Nile and rock climbing in rural Uganda are encouraged!)

It really is an amazing company doing really good and important work delivering solar power and financial services to people living off-grid in rural East and West Africa.

I see Fenix wouldn't give autodidacts with no degrees a chance.

I'm not sure why you would think that... a lot of us are self-taught. Feel free to apply!

I had checked your website and saw the degree requirement.

I used to work for a company that partnered with some of these law enforcement personnel and can confirm that they are amazing people doing a mostly thankless job. Absolute heroes

Well, this is a good excuse to not do any work

How could you loudly stop sending email?

Really awesome to see this on Hacker News. I work for a company that does pay-as-you-go solar power in Uganda and we rely on SMS messages to allow our customers to pay off their solar devices over time, and we too use a Django backend to control that communication. It may not be 'flashy' but SMS technology is so widespread in sub-saharan Africa so it's incredibly useful.

(PS we're hiring software engineers if anyone's interested! Mid-level role: http://fenixintl.theresumator.com/apply/Rfr3xP/Software-Engi... Senior role: http://fenixintl.applytojob.com/apply/r5rViV/Senior-Software...)

Very exciting news. The Channels project within Django is one of the most anticipated future projects and the Django REST framework has been a essential add-on to Django for a long time now

DRF is one of the best addon for django, I'm glad to hear it's finally gonna be (partially) integrated to the main project.

This was the dumbest part of the post, I thought. They just changed its name... how does this make it easier to connect with people?

Fenix International - Full Stack Web Developer (San Francisco, CA; or Kampala, Uganda)

Looking for web developers (with a focus on the backend) who want to work for a solar power company that is providing pay-to-own solar products for people off-grid in East Africa. The job would be working on our Django-based web application that runs our financial platform that allows our customers to pay for power as they use it until they've paid off the entire device.

It's a lot of fun, has some awesome opportunities to travel to East Africa involved, and you're helping to provide electricity to those who really need it!

Yeah this is expensive, but they're talking about living right next to your office. Of course the rents are extremely high there -- you're downtown. Kind of a misleading article

Rents all over SF and the bay area are expensive. SOMA within 0.5 miles is not really the point.
