It's an interesting comparison between American sports leagues and the ruthless competitiveness of European football.

It's quite possible in English football to found a "startup" like AFC Wimbledon and get it into the major leagues.

But there's still barriers - an absolutely astronomical investment is required to compete in the Premier league. I compare solid-state battery manufacturing, to extreme ultraviolet lithography.

I remember reading about attempts to commercialise EUV lithography in the early 2000s (in a paper magazine!) The same issues that SSB have now - some lucky examples from tiny yields in the lab, but the devil's own problem to scale it and develop reliable manufacturing.

ASML was able to commercialise it in 2018. I expect the timeline for SSB to be about the same, twenty years or so. I think we will see it but not until the 2030s.

Freight trains are mostly diesel, to be fair.


That's the configuration that Edison Motors is going for, for their semi trucks. Electric drive motors with a diesel generator.

Electric trains are pretty common in some parts of the world, it's just that the US has never bothered with it. And to be fair, diesel trains are already very energy efficient. I believe trains haul about as much cargo around as trucks do in the US on a daily basis, but the amount of fuel they consume is like a rounding error in comparison to trucks.

I think electrifying the trains is still worth doing, but if we want to reduce CO2 emissions and dependence on fossil fuels, it's not as important as getting those diesel-powered trucks off the road somehow.


We figured out a system for that in 1881 - electrified railways!

Of course it requires massive capital investment, a modal shift for the last mile, and it's somewhat inflexible.

Trains travel on semi level grades -not steep. Trucks on the other hand do, even if only counting interstates. Having a large tonnage truck going up hill lose power would not be fun. Maybe they can make them more reliable than MUNIs implementation.


On the flip side, when semi drivers get regenerative braking on the downhill and the far superior torque on the way up, you'll pry EV-semis only from their cold dead hands.

I still don't see why PHEVs aren't a thing in Semis so you can get regen braking, torque, efficiency, and range, but what do I know.

Wow, I'm surprised that Keith Bontrager is quoted saying that quick release axles and disc brakes are not a design flaw.

This is absolutely known as a design flaw! Downhill mountain bikers have known for decades (since say the 2000s?) that combination of brakes and wheels is problematic, and it's known as an immediate red flag that a mountain bike is poorly specced and designed. It is done solely because quick release axles are slightly cheaper. Front disc brakes require a thru-axle design on the front wheel!

I also didn't see in the article, if the Rad bike had cable or hydraulic disc brakes. In my opinion, despite being very common, cable disc brakes are under-powered and unreliable for a heavy consumer e-bike. They are powerful but easily lose their adjustment (I have cable disc brakes on one of my own bikes).

I'm pleased to see someone taking these cheap, bad e-bike designs to court.


Wow, I thought QR axles meant that they had a handle rather than a hex wrench socket. They ship these with QR skewers??

Forget downhill MTB, no reputable bike company ships road bikes without proper axles these days.

At any commercial yacht marina, the wharf will almost look like a Tesla parking lot, with rows of chargers. There's a plug for every berth.

If you do an image search for "marina" you can even spot them on most stock photos.


They could have used increasing rotational degrees - Xbox 360, 540, 720, 900 and so on. Just like action sports, very extreme.

I can say they do give Australia Post riders lots of training.

I have a relative who did rider and driver training for learners. As well as the general public, they also ran Australia Post training courses which were large, regular, and took a lot of time.
