At least here in New York (the state, not the city), school district boundaries have nothing to do with municipal boundaries (which, yeah, adds another layer of confusion!)

The larger cities and suburbs of New York definitely do have distinct district boundaries that follow the municipal boundary. It's only the smaller communities that expand their draw to township boundaries.

For the major NY urban districts, the municipal and school district boundaries are essentially the same.
