Ask HN: What are the best alternatives to GitHub?

I'm not sure if leaving over CoPilot is the right thing to do, but it'd be good to know the options.

I know GitLab is the biggest alternative, but I recall there being a controversy over there as well.

I like the idea of SourceHut, and I respect the mission, but the last time I tried to use it, the friction was just too high.

While I do have the skill to self-host, I don't really want to deal with the risk of data loss.

What are the best alternatives (even if it's those I've already mentioned)?

What’s wrong with self-hosted GitLab? I haven’t heard of any controversy except for them reaffirming their commitment to Ruby.

A bunch of important features are proprietary and closed source.

AFAIK the KDE team is happy with the self hosted free version of GitLab. There was no ven a submission about this here on HN.
