Japan will try to beam solar power from space by 2025 (engadget.com)

The fundamentals of this are costly. It's way way cheaper to maintain a Stirling cycle generator or aim some PV cells. Seems like someone(s) in JAXA have a pet project they intend to complete regardless of viability.

That's Japan's 1960s bullet time train back to the future audacity. Cost is the excuse economists give to explain they are incapable of getting started because they are ignorant and over rule engineers.

If it's concentrated enough it could work. Possibly. Maybe.

If it's concentrated enough, it would make a very good weapon.

The fact that such a weapon doesn't exist means that we haven't succeeded in beaming (usable amounts of) power yet.

Beam weapons are dependant on the energy source. Doubt the sun is giving that much.

Just a question of temporary storage while the energy builds.

Remember the xenon flashes for cameras?

You don't want to temporarily store anything or you'll end up like the last death star

Nah. We've got an exhaust vent.
