The lesson to be learned here is if you can do something different and get people to look at and talk about your posting, more people will apply because more people will see it. If the place all of those 'more' people see it is a place frequented by A players (such as HN), more A players will apply.

In other words, this was a marketing/PR win - not a win in terms of how you are asking people to apply.
