That's an interesting way to look at it. I don't entirely agree that a hobby is "skilled work of no apparent value". Several of my hobbies is skilled work of great apparent value.
My own personal differentiation is that work is what I do to pay the bills and to maintain the mechanics of living (housework, repairing things, civic duties, etc.) Hobbies are what I do to enjoy life and improve myself as a person.
