I've been breathing internet from 1999, and believe me, when Rails was born it was - specially compared with the former current status of web development - awesome and game changing. That justified hype brought a lot of people, specially designers, to Rails, and still brings them even if other tools are better suited for the task in hand, and you know what they say, "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail".
