Does anyone have firsthand experience with that or another Linux distro on that hardware? I have also heard of people running Ubuntu via VirtualBox or HyperV on a Surface Pro 3, which I'd expect to work as well as anything else.

the touch screen experience itself will give you the biggest trouble; the hardware itself is pretty compatible.

use of a touch-screen centric DE/WM (unity) would be advised, but other than that it should be OK.
